FAQ
Kunnskapsprøven in English: common questions
Can I take kunnskapsprøven in English?
No. The test is taken in Norwegian, and you cannot bring an interpreter. You may bring a dictionary. That is why Prøvetolk shows every question in Norwegian, exactly like the real test, with an English translation and explanation you can switch on and off. If you have dyslexia, Oslo kommune lets you take the test orally with a doctor's note.
How many questions are there, and what is the pass mark?
30 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes. You need 24 correct answers (80%) to pass. Prøvetolk scores you against the same 80% line.
Which kunnskapsprøve do I need?
There are three: one for salgsbevilling (selling beer and cider in a shop), one for skjenkebevilling (serving alcohol in a restaurant, bar or pub) and one for skjenkekontrollører (inspectors). Prøvetolk covers the shop and the bar/restaurant tests. The styrer and stedfortreder of a place with a licence must have passed the right test and be at least 20 years old.
What does the test cost and how do I book it?
You book through your kommune. In Oslo it costs 400 NOK, you book online with ID-porten and pay with Vipps, and the fee is not refunded if you cancel or fail. Other kommuner set their own price and booking routine, so check your kommune's website.
What is on the syllabus?
The alcohol act (alkoholloven) and the alcohol regulations (alkoholforskriften): age limits, opening hours for sale and serving, rules about intoxicated customers, advertising ban, internal control and the penalty point (prikk) system. The exact chapters differ a little between the shop and the serving test.
Is the etablererprøven the same test?
No. Etablererprøven is about the serving act (serveringsloven) and business rules, and is required for the daglig leder of a café or restaurant. Kunnskapsprøven is about the alcohol act. Many restaurant managers need both. Etablererprøven practice is coming to Prøvetolk next.
How long is the certificate valid?
When you pass you get a prøvebevis (certificate) by email. It does not expire.
Is Prøvetolk official?
No. Prøvetolk is independent practice material, not made by Helsedirektoratet, VINN or any kommune. The questions are written from the public law texts, and every answer shows the paragraph it comes from, so you can check it yourself.
How does full access work?
Pick your test (shop or bar/restaurant) and try the free questions first, no sign-up needed. Full access to the whole question bank costs 299 NOK for 60 days. After paying you get a licence key in your receipt; paste it on this page to unlock. It works on your phone and computer, with no account to create.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. You can cancel within 14 days of purchase for a full refund, no reason needed: email us with the address you bought with. A refunded key stops working. See the terms page for details.
